To switch from the "Slide list" (I call it the thumbnail view) to the Timeline, just press your keyboard's TAB key. It toggles from one to the other. You can also accomplish this by going to the Window menu and choosing Slide List / Timeline and, then, choosing either Show Slide List or Show Timeline.
