Long before Beijing became known as China's capital, the ancient city of Chang'an was the centre of political, cultural and religious life. While Chang'an's supremacy declined in the 10th century, its modern-day incarnation, Xian, is not only the country's historical heartland but the third most important city in China.

  • It used to be called Chang'An which meant "Long Peace." The Japanese city of Kyoto (Hei-an Kyo) was modeled after Chang'an. The name Hei-An also means Peace.
