My own empirical study saw more dust on the inside of the air cleaner housing when using a K&N. I'm going to concur with whatever moron IaintTheHerb is listening to.
-
that's a ridiculous statement
and obviously you were told that by a moron who knew nothing about cars
K&N's actually filter MORE dirt out of ur motor than paper filters and protect ur motor more
don't go around making ridiculous statements just 'cause you don't believe in a product

Yes, 5 clyinder, 3 liter, IDI turbo diesel.
-
I heard a whistling noise is this a turbo diesel?
On my ford diesel 4 cylinder, adjusting the fuel pump makes it a different car, hardly any turbo lag any more, just a little smokey pre-boost. MPG actually seems better when I drive steady cos I can hold a higher gear at lower revs etc, if I drive hard I loose about 5mpg, but thats balls out thrashing at 115mph.

The "point" of using a paper filter instead of a K&N is to keep the inside of your engine clean. A race builder doesn't care about long term longevity, so yeah, a K&N is worth the added crap that gets let into your intake. Unless you plan on rebuilding your engine sooner rather than later, a paper filter will keep out lots of fine sand. Do an oil analysis test and find out for yourself what's in there.

celloprof,
Then there is no point in arguing about it. You have obviously made up your mind to believe the hype behind K&N. If you won't accept professional lab tests performed on a $285,000 machine at the machines manufacturer then nothing will convince you that you are wrong.
-
This is the whole point of a lab test. You can carefully control the conditions to get fair results. In real life one of the cars would be hit by another driver before the test was complete, another would have a transmission failure or something, an the test would never be completed. Just because you dobn't like reality does not make it wrong. For example, I don't like the level of blowby my 300CD has, but I have no choice but to accept it.

That was 15 seconds too. Watch the tach. It jumps at 38 seconds then hits 60 at 53 seconds.
Slight revision... after a very carefull frame by frame my time was 15.9 seconds.
