The tantalizingly river Lainio is one of our last wild and free salmon rivers.
It runs through the northern part of Swedish Lapland, beginning in the mountains in the north, through canyons and ancient forest areas to the estuary in the Baltic sea.
Here roams the famous Baltic salmon the streams on their impressing journey over 3500 km from the south in the Baltic on the quest to spawn in the upper regions on the river Lainio. During the period from 15th of June to the 31st you have the marvelous opportunity to test your skills with this Atlantic salmons bigger brother, which reaches weights of at least over 50lb and a fish of 20lb is more a rule than an exception.

Fishing waters The area has six fast-flowing rivers, 400-600 km long, and about 2,500 forest and mountain lakes, all within easy reach of each other. The Lainio wilderness river is the best known, mainly because of its fantastic salmon fishing, but also for its trout and grayling. Downstream from the village of Lainio the river changes its character and forms a canyon with vertical cliffs on each side. Anglers can land from a boat in certain places and experience some exciting fishing for trout or grayling. This area also has the best salmon pools for both spinning and fly-fishing.
The exciting fishing in the forest and mountain lakes also attracts the keen angler.
Season: Summer/Jun-Sept. Fishing for salmon and trout is permitted until 31 August. Winter/Nov-May
Species: Salmon (record 23.1 kg) see also special information of the Lainio Salmon, char (record 3.1 kg), grayling, pike, whitefish, trout, perch and sea trout.
Methods: Fly-fishing, spinning, bait and jigging.
Equipment
When choosing your equipment for salmonfishing in the river Lainio one should have in mind that it is a quite big river with lots of strong and wild rapids. Because of this a two-handed flyrod in the range from 14-17‟ with lines from 9-12 is the most suitable choice. The flies mostly used in Lainio are in sizes 1-6, but during periods with less water in the river a size 10 might be good choice. The patterns you should bring is hair variants of classics like Jock Scott, Thunder „n Lightning, Black Doctor, Silver Doctor and Green Highlander. These are tied mainly with fox hair or likewise in bigger sizes and squirrel in the smaller ones. Add to this a Ally‟s shrimp, the Heggeli, the Lainio Fly, Blue Charm and Sunrise Shadow and a few Irish shrimp patterns and you have a very good selection of flies for the salmon of river Lainio.

Wading
The rivers rapids and currents can be big and very strong on some spots which can make wading an effort.
Wading is seldom especially deep and with a guide to advise you on how to approach the river and a good
wading staff you find it often fairly easy to get in a good fishing position. Although your fishing in the north of Lapland and a good distance north of the arctic circle it can get warm in the summer, waders that are breathable Gore-Tex or likewise is definitely to prefer.
