Milling machine CNC conversion built around an GRBLshield from Synthetos.com. The GRBLshield is an Arduino shield that can drive three bipolar stepper motors up to 2.5 amps per phase, and contains an open source G-code interpreter called GRBL.
Stream G-code over USB to the GRBLshield, and you're in business.

Hey really nice :D i was wondering if i could get the obj_to_gcode.py file the on the converts the OBJ file to G-Code and seem to find it :S it would be awesome if you could - thanks

Sometimes I feel like I'm getting better at Modo....... starting to become a better all around craftsman.......... then I see a video like this and realize that I'm still crawling in the mud eating my own gruel. I love the things you do in your "spare time"...... Like your living room Lens flare box.....

There is a lot of gear reduction to get sufficient torque to drive this thing. As a result, the theoretical position resolution is better than 1/10,000th of an inch. I'm sure it's less in practice.
The mill has some backlash in the mechanism, and I measured it with a dial indicator to within a couple of ten thousandths. My G-code generator compensates for backlash at the direction changes. Again, I haven't measured repeatability, but it seemed pretty good to me.

@Rileyporter I'm using Modo, a 3d modeling and rendering package for doing computer graphics. It's not a CAD tool as such, but I know it well since I use it for work. The nice thing about this toolchain is that any portion of it can be substituted with another if I wish to improve capability or performance. For example, I could get a much better CAD/CAM solution in place, like one of the commercial solutions, if I really needed to do something sophisticated. BTW, thanks for the GRBLshield!
