This is the first olympics I remember. I was 9 years old. My mother commented that she believed that the guy in the gray suit marching in front of each country's team, carrying the sign bearing its name, was the same guy every time.

The US flagbearer was Rafer Johnson--1st African American to carry the flag in the Olympics. He went on to win the decathlon.

The singer Johnny Mathis could have been in the 1960 Summer Olympics if he hasn't discovered his talent in singing.

@canman5060 - Johnny Mathis wasn't a sprinter, he was a high jumper and hurdler and his PR was 6'5-1/2"' in 1954. A nice mark, but no where near close enough to qualifying for an Olympics. He tied for 6th in the California State Meet high jump in 1952 with a mark of 6-1/2'

Wrong, the BBC televised parts of the 1948 Games in London LIVE....
-
Rome Olympics were the first ever to be transmitted LIVE(not registred)

It is really interesting to see this. The athletes march in such an orderly fashion. Now, they parade not march. It is casual and more relaxed nowadays. Quite different!
Thank you for posting this.
This is a real piece of history, and it's just awesome to watch.

Extraordinary witness to history! Although born in 1960, I hadn't yet arrived when this was filmed.
