1973 tube stock Approaching The eastbound platform at Northfields station. The controllers voice can be heard on the cab radio, telling train operators that Kings Cross station has re opened after a brief closure.
I was the driver of the first Piccadilly line train out of Northfields when it when OPO. I was on nights (I was based at Arnos Grove) really funny going into the yard at night with a guard on the back and coming out in the morning doing it all yourself. The worst thing was I had to make my own tea at Heathrow.
Boston Manor to Northfields. As an old Box Boy, if it was down the fast, it was 23 points lever, followed by 18 & 21 to get the train into the platform and 25 was the station starter. If it was down the local, it was, 18, 21 & 23 to the station starter. I can remember the old 38 stock shaking the hell out of you. If you watch the video carefully, a door on your left as the train enters the station, that's my old office, a woman gave birth in there in '74, it was a boy.
The train arriving at platform 1 is for Newcastle upon Tyne, Darlington, Middlesbourgh, Stevenage, Liverpool, Leeds, York, Durham and London Kings Cross. I have always wanted to be a train announcer.
Did you get used to it? By the way, I live near Manor House and the Picc rumbles under my floor every two or three mins!! Both the Southbound and Northbound tunnels seem to directly underneath, causing mini 'earthquakes' which can be a very shaky experience if a train is going 40mph or both trains pass each other coincidentally!
I used to live in Northfields in the days when the ,59 stock ran on the line. they made a right old racket going over that crosssover! Now i live in peaceful Sussex :0)
