@UEGiPHoBiiA Building roads is all about balancing costs. Going around hills saves digging, but costs more in concrete/asphalt. It's all about compromise. Not accusing you of lying, but just of believing something that is untrue. The plane-landing idea is a known myth. Check it out on Snopes dot com if you don't believe me (type Landing of Hope and Glory into the search box.) Highways have been used to land a plane in a pinch, but they were not planned with that in mind.

@kw757 While that is one benefit to having straight roads.. it would have been less expensive and easier to build roads that move with the land. The original highway system in America was proposed for Military use. Being able to move troops and supplies quickly across the country in their time of need. There are multiple reasons why the highway system has straight stretches. However at the time of it's conception, the idea of being able to land a plane on one was considered.

@UEGiPHoBiiA What have you been smoking? The roads are straight because that's the shortest distance between two points. You only make a curve in a road when you have to.
-
When the highway system in America was designed, it was designed to have long, flat, straight stretches where planes could land in emergency. That is why highways don't move with the land in America, like they do in Europe.

I'd hate to be the pilot and have to explain to the cops that I ACTUALLY had an engine falure and that I wasn't going to pay the 500 dollar fine for speeding.
