I missed playing this game. I never even knew there was a world 9 until now. I've beaten the game, but never saw this. Also, this game was actually the REAL SEQUEL to Super Mario Bros, but they thought that this would have been too hard for Americans.

Lost levels, the original super mario bros 2 in came out before the gameboy color on the famicom system(the japanese nes). The US basically got a sprite hack/text edit of a simular for our version... aparently it was too hard.
Super Mario for Super players and lost levels are just there to hide the fact that this is the real Super Mario bros 2.

you can play these levels with saving states

If you play with an emulator, you can use the emulator's save function, of course. But you will not reach world 9 if you ever use the game's save function.
