This pinch harmonic / wide vibrato "trick" has been used by many, but is commonly associated with Zakk Wylde because of its prevalence in his playing. It's a fairly simple technique that involves creating a pinch harmonic on a fretted note, and then shaking that note with a wide vibrato.

This trick is often done on the lower strings, which are in many cases in a drop tuning. The looseness of the de-tuned string allows for a very wide vibrato, while the thickness of the lower string produces a rich, full sounding harmonic. This effect can also be done on other strings, but each string will vary in timbre . (lower strings will sound thicker, higher strings will cut through more)

This effect is often enhanced in the studio, by adding a second track that doubles the original guitar.

  • Are you using EMG pickups? Do they make any difference?

  • @tiagodon

Well the EMGs are great pickups and you certainly can get pinch harmonics with them, but those are just stock SG pickups. Any set of nice humbuckers will do the trick. You can get these the single coils to, but not quite as easily.

  • could this work on a fender stratocaster with regular stock pickups?

  • @DrSpinner1

You can do it, but you really need to crank up the gain.

  • well apperently you play a note with your pick and then slightly touch the string with your thumb. Doing a pinch harmonic on a certain area on the string (even with the same note) can give a different sound

  • In soviet, Russia, Harmonics Pinchs you!!!

  • That long pinch harmonic was filthy and sexy <3

  • Thanks a lot for these videos, this one and the Motorcycle guitar trick gave me a couple new things to experiment around with.

  • @pyromaniac344 I was just about to write the same ;)

  • I've never been able to get a good look at how to do it, this really helped!

  • what's the song?

  • @DiscoverGuitarOnline Thanks. I really dont know how you do it. I can do pinch harmonics, but not as round and compressed as yours (specially on the E and A strings). What would be your main advice?
