  • thanks for a very meaningful abhang . i loved the description of the four kinds of speech and also the discovery of the lord within ! beautiful translation as always ! as this abhang mentions karnataka , was this hymn composed while the sage was traversing that state ? plz would you give some historical detail about this abhang ? thank you so much !

  • @crazyoldsongs According to story of Bhakta Pundalika a King from Karnataka built the temple in Pandharpur and brought Vitthala's statue to the temple. There is detailed info on wikipedia under Vithoba

Kanada actually means difficult to understand in Marathi. Other roundabout explanation some have given is, Karnataku is "kari Nataku" means he who unfolds the drama of Sansaara on world stage!

  • Great addition!Such archaic language is difficult to translate!two comments-Dnyanoba is a philosopher poet- nirguna tattwa symbolised by Vithoba's swaroop is splendidly expressed in so few words! Appreciate the imagery of Maya in Sagun swaroop-the confusion whether he is "sanmukha" or "Vinmukha"; his elusive being just when one craves to embrace him;and the ultimate realisation that He is within you, when you put all your knowedge at stake to search Him!Despite my atheism, the intensity appeals.

  • @conchange

    A Cool observation! Interesting!

Any chance the temple is at least as old as Sant Dnyaneshwar's time? as old as the story behind the transfer of the idol from Vijaynagar to Pandharpur?

  • Thanks for the translation ... the language is old ... its great help

Of course, the Mangeshkars are exceptional!

  • @conchange (Cont) In the later stanzas the woman can't see Vitthal with her physical eyes (क्षेम देऊं गेलें तंव मीचि मी एकली ।आसावला जीव राहो), But with innervision of introspection (दृष्टीचां डोळां पाहों गेलें तंव), Vitthal is realized inside( भीतरीं पालटु झाला). In my humble opinion these lines are more important than being chauvinistic about our linguistic differences. After all it is not the language on our tongue but the language in our heart counts!

  • @conchange Kanada probably means difficult to understand, Karnataku probably means from Karnataka state any other interpretation appears stretched. Revisiting the lyrics the other lines in this Virani abhang are far more important. In the beginning Dnyneshwar tells us Vitthal does not show himself or answer back unless one shows devotion (आळविल्या नेदी सादु). One does not have to chant his name 1000 times but dialogue occurs when differences disappear(शब्देंविण संवादु दुजेंवीण अनुवादु)

  • @dwhprofile I agree with you. The work "Nataki" sounds very contemperory Marathi. Plus there is another one to be explained... "Kanada Raja Pandharicha"

  • @conchange thank you !

  • @crazyoldsongs I visited the ruins in Hampi (Karnatak) which was once the capital of Krishnadevaraya till it fell to the Bahamanis. Amoung the ruins is a "Vijaya Vittal" temple right nex to the famous musical pillar palace. The temple does not have an idol in it and as per the guide that it was moved out of there and perhaps to Pandharpur? I haven't found any historical proof yet but it is fascinating to know that Vitthal had an even bigger following after moving to Pandharpur.

  • Thank you SJis Back!! you have done a great job by helping us understand such timeless, immortal songs.. pls continue the good work.. i show these videos to my family as well and they've got to learn a lot too.. Thank you!!
