With a mix of satire and sentimentality, the authors tell the tale of the naïve peasant Nemorino, who appears to need an love potion to win the affections of the wealthy farm owner Adina. It offers the huckster Dulcamara the perfect chance to unload a case of cheap Bordeaux. Donizetti sketches a nuanced picture of nineteenth-century village life through a nearly endless sequence of musical show-stoppers. The fact that the amorous adventures would have been resolved just as well without the magic elixir is a moot point: the quack uses the happy couple as a real-life testimonial to his wonder product.
