A little background on luma/alpha mattes and their history, and then a tutorial using them in a weird way with a Particular field to create a transformation.

You can create a luminance matte out of a traveling particle field, apply it to an image as a luma matte, and then as your image "dissolves", you can make something appear in its place (with the exact same shape) using another alpha or luma matte.

The first matte comes from the partlcle field
The second matte comes from the luma of the object you are trying to transform or dissolve.

Trapcode Particular was used to create the luma matte, but you can use just about anything, including a linear wipe or any other moving object or texture that you can create a luma matte out of.
