Simple electric battery-powered dc magnet motor. The current in the copper wire and the corresponding magnetic field flux through the coil gives rise to the rotation.

The SECRET is to strip the outer end of the wire of half its insulating cover to make it conduct only for half a revolution. Otherwise it would start turning the other way after half a revolution and stop in a orthogonal position.

Made as a school project.

  • so is that copper wire , what kind and what kind of magnet is needed?

  • @junior1984able yes, it is copper wire. I don't remember exactly what magnet was used but some kind of neodymium magnet, as it needs to be quite strong.

  • is it possible to power a small toy car with a homopolar motor?

  • I guess it is theoretically possible. Though I'm afraid the torque produced wouldn't be enough to compensate for the weight of the battery (and car). Atleast you would need a much stronger magnet, which again probably would add more weight. It would be a cool and nerdy toy though =D

  • where you get the idea

  • I guess we got some influence from other videos and websites, and then made it into our own design, with some modifications. It's a long time ago, I don't remember so well anymore...

  • is the wire used a copper wire

  • @littleteddy9 i got it in my science book but i made a magnet to pik up paper clips im 5th grade -_-

  • @rodmylon the answer to that relies therein the use of rare earth magnets which are light as dimes and powerful as hell

  • @rodmylon hhhh...NO ! you need a lithium battery..and pyeeeeww !!! ;D
