@junior1984able yes, it is copper wire. I don't remember exactly what magnet was used but some kind of neodymium magnet, as it needs to be quite strong.

is it possible to power a small toy car with a homopolar motor?

I guess it is theoretically possible. Though I'm afraid the torque produced wouldn't be enough to compensate for the weight of the battery (and car). Atleast you would need a much stronger magnet, which again probably would add more weight. It would be a cool and nerdy toy though =D

I guess we got some influence from other videos and websites, and then made it into our own design, with some modifications. It's a long time ago, I don't remember so well anymore...
