@zack3mire The other thing to consider, besides power, is that the EX puts out a tonne more interference when it comes to radio signal. Meaning if you ever plan to use these in a wireless environment, the EX II is a much better choice.

Was wondering if I had brand new batteries and they leaked in the 430ex and now there is crusty stuff inside the 430ex could I fix that or is the 430ex broke for good I have only used it once?

%20 is a marginal rate at first, but after many many flashes the difference in sequence will certainly show itself. Still the 430EX is a great value.

Looks like thats the case lulz

ok, so the 20% decreased recycle time doesnt really matter much for amatuer shooters like me. I should go for the EX rather than the ex ll right ?

@zack3mire
For 99% of the population, the EX would be fine. You can find them on the used market for fairly reasonable prices these days too.

So my question is: what makes the EXII worth getting over the original besides the 20% decreased recycle time? If you've used both, please let me know.

The only noticeable difference in the EXII is the silent recycling and the clamp-down foot (rather than the old screw-down type). If you can find a cheap, used EX I'd opt for that instead. As you can see, Canon's claimed 20% decreased recycle time is a bit of a stretch...

Yes, but do you think it's a 20% faster difference as Canon claims it is? Nope. :)
