Florida Film Production Coalition(FFPC)supports the growth, development and continued success of the Film, TV, and Print Industry throughout the State of Florida.
To support those who believed in their product when it was not easy. If any of us think that by undercutting price we will survive rest assured that business plan is very temporary. It affects future research and development financing as it affects the quality of those who survive.
Only a friendly encouragement to think of ourselves as an International Community that has the same needs.
One of the reasons that Panavision was so successful against the Studio camera departments was that they responded to directors of photography. Once the buyer has forced everyone down to the lowest possible price they will tire of the process and the cinematographer will once again be allowed to participate more fully in the selection of their tools. I urge all of our friends at the design, development, manufacturing, and service industries to consider the community that they service.
These are facts, not my conjecture, gleaned from hundreds of hours of interviews with the greatest cinematographers who ever lived. Even today so many of us have poor relations with the post houses or labs because they see the customer as the buyer, not the user. The playing field is considerably different from that of only ten years ago. I urge all of us to encourage all manufacturers and service organizations to understand the cyclical nature of the current business.
Are we to face the "take it or leave it" mentality that we faced when there was only one color processing technology available. They dictated to the studios when they could start their productions. When the studios owned their own cameras and equipment you took what you were given and didn't complain. When the studios owned their own labs they could alter the chemistry (change the time or temperature) to show greater profit to the front office.
If Arriflex had taken themselves out of the selling of their products I would more readily understand. Certainly the Panavision rental model appealed to them but it seems you just can't have it both ways or you will be destroying those customers who believed in you first. My fear for our future as Users is that we are becoming marginalized with fewer and fewer vendors/choices. There are fewer lighting and grip companies, fewer post production facilities, fewer camera rental facilities.
I have a serious concern with all of those individuals and small mom and pop rental agencies who have faithfully "invested" in the Arri brand in the good years and bad; taken the risk with their creditors to make sure they had the very best product available. Suddenly they are in direct competition with the manufacturer that they buy from (or at least with agencies that own the rental facilities). How can you survive?
Equipment manufacturers who also run rental houses or post production centers
while at the same time selling the same gear to rental and post houses and
using their leverage to lowball rental and facility prices are a cancer on the business.
I have always made it a practice to avoid using such facilities whenever possible. It is just bad business.
