VOICE CHAT: Who's speaking?
There is an icon on the bottom of your screen called "Active Speakers", it is on the bottom right of your screen, just to the left of the Talk button. If you click it, you can see a list of people. If there is a green dot next to their name they have said something while you were nearby, even if you don't see their avatar. If their dot is gray they have not yet spoken. You can also click a name and click a volume slider to adjust how loudly or softly you will hear them speak.

Voice chat is great for people with tendinitis who have to limit their typing.

as this tutorial shows, you can enable and disable voice, and there's lots of reasons to do both... so get your alt on and voice as appropriate to your needs.

Voice chat completely spoils Second Life. I hope it never becomes commonplace. It means that females can't impersonate males and vice versa. That is one of the cool things about Second Life, that anyone could be anyone.

This is exactly the information I needed for our SL group right now. Thanks Torley!
