yes you can use your hands..although it will be slightly challenging to do the bass drum part while trying all of this ..you can try by playing the hats as you would on the kit and the snare , then alternate your left (snare) hand to hit the bass part to make the bass drum effect. i've tried this before ,but i mostly use the hats with my foot as a time keeper and effect.. try it and see how it goes ..cheers !

You're saying you use foot to open and close the hat at time spots. That I understand. But do you hit it when closed with you hands?

you keep your hats going as a time keeper, like a click , as you would on a drumkit..it 'll sort of give you the affect of it being played with a stick ..

So you just hit the hat with your hands? Its sounds OK even if closed?

you can also us your hi-hat to keep a groove or as an effect like your actually playing it with sticks..i use it all the time and it sounds great..drummers come up to me and have said that they couldn't believe it didn't cross their mind to use hats for an added extra cool sound !!

I play the drums and wonder if getting one would be a good idea. They look pretty fun :P
