i decided to try out a few pedals in parallel to the clean signal.. thought i might as well record it and throw it up here! i'm playing a Squier Jagmaster with Fender MIM Wide Range pickups (neck only) into a Peavey Delta Blues 115.. guitar riff is from Mono's 'Kidnapper Bell'.. other substances were also used in the recording of this film, causing poor playing and mild loss of dexterity.

the looper pedal is made by this1ismyne, and is fully 'dry' at 100% - so it's set to a bit less than a 1/4 of the way up and the levels on the overdrive pedals are set to balance up relatively closely.

initial thoughts:

* Danelectro Cool Cat TOD v1 - a bit too compressed and flat sounding so had to take some bass off and boost the treble.

* Vox Valvetone - i like this one. the tone control goes into super-jangle set this high and is nicely dynamic. the natural lack-of-bass works well in adding that break-up and extra treble boost.

* Ibanez TS-9 - similar to the Valvetone with the bass-cut and dynamic gain but also sounds more compressed in the low-ish mids which thickens the sound up. i'm not sure i want that with as much delay and reverb as i normally use.

* Marshall BB-2 - sounds a bit 'rounder' but the high-end is a bit too crispy/frazzly.

* Dod Bass Grunge FX92 - i really like this pedal. it comes with a dry/wet blend anyway which works really well for layering with clean guitar. has a more guttural sound with deep lows and a crumbly gain that sustains really well. the tone knob (2nd from left) is way too harsh above 1/4. gain (3rd from left) set low but can still get pushed with harder playing.

* Danelectro Cool Cat CO-1 v1 - has a more transparent 'open' sound with a bit of mid-scoop so the gain sounds pretty good and doesn't step on the clean signal so much..

Summary - i think parallel overdrives keep your cleans clean and chimey but add an extra layer that widens your sound rather than masking, or changing it to a completely new sound dictated by the eq on a particular overdrive pedal. "post-rock" crescendo's are a lot more fun with different layers going on in the overall sound!

  • shoe gaze without the shoes.

  • @scorpguitar79 buffers are made to prevent tone suck

  • did you get any tone suck with all of those buffered pedals running into each other? might want to try this experiment again but one at a time so that each previous and later pedals buffers arent affecting the tone.

  • perfect as always.

    This really shows off the pedals for what they are and can be.

    amazing.
