The adverse effects of Prozac can be traced to the drug's effect on brain chemistry. As Peter R. Breggin, M.D., explains in Talking Back to Prozac: What Doctors Aren't Telling You About Today's Most Controversial Drug, Prozac acts as a stimulant to the nervous system.6 Therefore, it can produce side effects that mimic those of amphetamines and are exaggerations of the desired effects of Prozac in relieving depression.

According to Dr. Breggin, the FDA psychiatrist who wrote the agency's safety review of Prozac stated that the drug's effects--including nausea, insomnia and nervousness--resembled the profile of a stimulant drug, rather than a sedative.7 Dr. Breggin adds that nearly all of the side effects of Prozac listed in the Physician's Desk Reference "fit into the stimulant profile." Among others, these stimulant symptoms include headaches, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, tremors, weight loss, nausea, diarrhea, mouth dryness, anorexia and excessive sweating.

In short, a drug that acts as a stimulant also can overstimulate the body systems. In his book, Dr. Breggin offers the example of a person who takes Prozac to relieve depression (the beneficial effect) and suffers from agitation and insomnia (the negative effects). These adverse effects "are inherent in the stimulant effect that produces feelings of energy and well-being," Dr. Breggin writes. "In this sense, the difference between 'therapeutic effects' and 'toxic effects' are merely steps along a continuum from mild to extreme toxicity."9

With that in mind, what follows is a discussion of some of the side effects that have been associated with Prozac:

  • I would prefer weed any day for its potential treatment ranging from depression to even cancer. It is a natural herb which mother nature had given us to us. Yet we prefer synthetic medicines which are toxic and harmful... Just abandon all the anti-depressants. P.S My big bro was treated for schizo for antidepressants ... His life is ruined now.. I am not anti-psychiatry.. But I am fed up with politics by big pharma.. Even for another 100 years we can never expect drugs for cancer, schizo ...

  • any shrink that prescribes these antidepressants to anyone for any reason at all, truly doesn't care about their patients. if they truly did, they would help their patient overcome and deal with their emotional issues. life is hard, but taking mind numbing drugs that bury the emotions and not deal with them is even worse. then compound it with the risks of the side effects. so many are on this dangerous "happy" drug and they're all a bunch of zombies.

  • @Silenus6 AMEN to the juicers!! I use mine daily! for breakfast and snacks. and lots of water and a good diet and exercise. Phooie to those psych drugs

  • @josepheath Ok bud, you may be feeling better already because you're being proactive. Maybe thats your problem in the first place. Taking a drug wont do anything for you. Maybe you should research your drugs before you take them. Most are only tested for 6-8 months with little to no difference in placebo. I'm telling you how you will feel bc i have experience with them...I'm not trying to scare you out of taking drugs that have little to no efficacy; though, you should be. *in creepy yoda voice*

  • @hitlerscow rofl nice troll name

  • @Silenus6 lmfao

  • i was giving Prozac and i couldnt sleep felt more depressed i felt like i didnt belong here.
