John Cameron Swayze's "Camel Newsreel Theatre" was NOT NBC's or network TV's first nightly newscast.
In 1940, Lowell Thomas' NBC radio newscast was simulcast on NBC's New York TV station (and maybe in a couple of other spots on the East Coast).
This clip ignores the fact that for a brief time after Chet Huntley retired, NBC had three rotating anchormen--John Chancellor, David Brinkley, and Frank McGee; and Roger Mudd's short 1982-83 stint as Brokaw's co-anchor.
They used video newsreels in the theatre for years... yes, the novelty was it being in the home on tv. Sadly, the nightly newscast are dying.... due to other outlets and younger generations being too self absorbed to take time to watch..
I remember as far back as John Cameron Swayze's "Camel Camera" which was on film, where as "Douglas Edwards with the News" on another network, was live.
