In which speculates upon what his seventh grade self liked about The Slave Dancer, by Paula Fox.

This may seem a bit jumpier than usual. I'm practicing for my SHVP video.

  • I'm curious, do you have an ACTUAL list? Written down somewhere?

    It would have been nice if you knew the exact reason you liked it the first time (assumptions about length being it aside) so you could compare then and now. Oh well.

  • Well . . . no. I didn't bother to keep track of such things in my younger years, unfortunately. So I'm basically just trying to remember what books I really liked. I do remember what my younger self enjoyed reading, and it usually wasn't historical fiction. (I love it now, of course, but not so much then.) So I can some educated guesses . . . and I'm pretty sure I liked Slave Dancer because it was short.

  • So you reread it right? I couldn't tell. Haha.

    A Series of Unfortunate Events = LOVE (well at least that's what high school me thought). I'm assuming you've read all of them. It's so rare to meet someone who has read all of them. It's the same with the Chronicles of Narnia. It makes me sad b/c I want to talk about the last book of both series, but I can't. There's no one to talk to! :)

  • I have read all the Unfortunate Events series, yes. Narnia I haven't finished yet. (I'm still on Silver Chair.) But once I do, I'll be sure to let you know. :)

  • thanks for helping me cheat

  • hey, how did u get soooooo many bookss? thanks

  • IT DOES NEED TO BE LONGER

  • you should read Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry

  • Such were really odd. I had truly expected Jessy to have been murdered at the end or come home to find that his family had left and he was never to seem then again.....though that may have been a little to intense for middle school reading levels. Either way, I liked it but I am in no hurry to re-read it within the next few years. Like I said, It had real potential...but it kind of ruined it with length and the fact that it was more or less extensively written for children. Good video!

  • I read this book and have conflicting emotions on it. I didn't like the fact that it was short....I have to totally agree with you there. What I did like, however, was the overall story. The characters were unique, and I just wish it was longer so we could have more time to spend getting to know them further. One thing I have to say about it is that the ending took me by surprise. I think it was actually a little odd. It seemed to all end abruptly, and the last few pages with the old man and-

  • I totally agree about the Newberry Award wining books. They all seem to be the same. No matter the subject matter, they all seem to have the same style.

  • I'm reading this story now as a freashmen and it's so weird to hear your point of view on it

    LOL =]

    and btw i cant believe that kids in the seventy's read and we still have too!

  • I think one problem people have with Narnia is that by the last few books (the last book in particular) things don't really make sense unless you try to see the Biblical symbolism. Most people don't like Biblical symbolism. Haha.
