You do realize that Gelu doesn't need to be in a town to upgrade his "archers" to sharpshooters, right?
-
You didnt have the gold to recruit the archers, thats why they ran.

@whyhonestly There is something with the morale of your troops when using the 'wrong' hero...could be that I am confused with a newer version.......sorc/knight/wiza
rd vs barb/warlock/undead... -

It's wierd that noone have told you this,but when you got level 1 in mage guild you can see how far you can upgrade the mage guild.Just click on your mage guild to see your spells and now look at the places where the spells will be later on.If you can get level 4 mage guild for wxample you will see 2scrolls at that place.If you can't upgrade it to lvl 4 there will be nothing there where the spells are going to be.
Sorry for my english, it's not my first languae, but hop you can understand

Thanks for the tip. A few people have told me this recently, though oddly not until I started doing shadow of death.
In practice, it hasn't mattered because I'm going for ease of wins rather than a fast time, and that means building up mage guilds regardless, but it's still good to know.

Here goes, totally inappropriate place to ask such a question but it's up to date and finding detailed info on a years old game is pretty painful:
is there any specific penalty / bonus having a hero of the "proper" town lead the respective town troops? For example, is having a knight leading castle troops more beneficial than having, say, an overlord lead the same (not counting eventual specific creature specialties)?
Apologies and thanks, I'm catching up with the videos!

@whyhonestly
No, other than if they have a creature specialty where obviously the relevant creatures get a bonus I don't think there's anything.

I've said it before, but I'm pretty sure you can upgrade your ranged units to sharpshooter on the field, I seem to remember upgrading stuff to enchanters when not in a town atleast.
Seems like it would work the same way with those.
