The Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) held a lecture entitled: "The Life of a Stand Up Poet" by Edward Field.
This lecture is co-sponsored with the Creative Writing Program, The English Department and the Fine Arts and Art History at AUB.
For half a century, since publication by Grove Press of his first book, STAND UP, FRIEND, WITH ME, in 1963, Edward Field has been a leading figure in American poetry. His ten books of poetry, his major awards, which began with the Lamont Award from the Academy of American Poets, and his indefatigable touring the U.S. giving readings, notably at the Library of Congress, have built a solid reputation. Despite publishing two anthologies of American poetry and occasionally teaching a poetry workshop, he has subsisted largely outside the academe and the literary establishment. His independence has also earned him a large following, notably in Southern California, where a movement called Stand Up Poets took its name from him and his rejecting Modern Poetry's obscurity for direct speech. In recent years, he has also published fiction, VILLAGERS, written with his partner Neil Derrick, a literary memoir, THE MAN WHO WOULD MARRY SUSAN SONTAG, and a travel book on Afghanistan, which reflects his understanding of the Muslim world based on years of visits to countries in North Africa and the Middle East.
