Mark James, who wrote the song, recorded the original version of Suspicious Minds in 1968. His recording was a commercial failure.

Chips Moman started working with Elvis in 1969 and played him the song. Elvis decided he could turn it into a hit. Moman, who also produced Mark James' version, used the same arrangement.

Before the single was released, Elvis decided to try the song out in front of a live audience. A week later he returned to the studio to do some overdubs on the original recording and rearranging it to include a false ending coda, wherein the song begins to fade out, only to return for a vamp on the lines "We're caught in a trap/I can't walk out/Because I love you too much baby."

  • Like a B.J.Thomas???

  • @noriatsu333 B.J. Thomas recorded Suspicious Minds after Elvis scored a hit with it. The song was used as the closing track on the album "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head."

  • its the same musicians playing on both elvis' version and this one.

  • I do believe Ronnie Milsap sings harmony on this song. Can anyone confirm this?

  • massa!

  • Elvis didn't give his permission to the fade out part at the end. He heard it when it was released on radio and blew a fuse when he realised they changed it.

  • I grew up next door to Mark James. He used to give me a ride home after school sometimes. He's such a great talent and a real down to earth guy. Fun to be with, I like him and his wife, Karen, a whole lot....Gayle

  • This is a different mix to the Scepter 45. Horns and strings on the choruses are really prominent where they are hardly audible (if they're even there) on the single.

  • Nice to listen to the original version..

  • This deserves to be better known x posting to facebook x
