1) Gale Storm - A star in movies and the TV series My Little Margie, and a fine singer. She had 6 Top 10 hits, this one was #53.
2) 2:33 - Elvis Presley - not released til 1965, #33.
3) 4:43 - Marie Knight - real hit calibre. This is so rare you won't find it anywhere else right now.
It originated as an R&B hit in the New Orleans area in 1956, written by Titus Turner and sung by Marie Knight. That was the inspiration for Elvis', who recorded it in 1957, but it wasn't released then. The white cover versions were done by The Crew Cuts and by Gale Storm in 1956. Not a big hit or the best known.

  • Great voice and a great girl.

  • Elvis' version was of course recorded in Jan of 1957 during his "Loving You" recording sessions.

  • i love that :D

  • Yep - even Wikipedia says so!

And Just A Closer Walk with Thee came first.

Not that popular music ever borrowed from Gospel.

    Nope. Not ever.

  • I notice how much "Why" sounds like the gospel song "Just A Closer Walk with Thee?

    This can't be a coincidence!
