Canon HF S 100 video camera has been tested at the first three lakes of Križna jama, Cave of 22 Lakes, probably Slovenia's most cherished show cave. 4 standard, non-LED 12 V bulbs, 2 x 75 W and 2 x 50 W, sealed lead-acid battery powered, were the main source of illumination. They were supported by 20/40 W and 10/20 W headlights. The camera settings were: Cine mode, 24 P, no gain limit, autofocus. In large open spaces such as the first cave lake, with little or no side wall reflections, at distances over 5 meters supplied static illumination proved inadequate. Trailing the target with light would be required. In smaller spaces and at closer distances more reasonable results were obtained, even contre-jour was possible. The camera itself is small and light enough to allow easy portability, its screen viewfinder appropriately bright for framing, autofocus adequate. The film was made by Primož Jakopin with the support of Alojz Troha.

Next test, in a more difficult, less clean cave environment, will be performed in Newfoundcave, Najdena jama.

  • Man, I'd really love to paddle the cave currents. Great quality camera by the way.

  • I really didn't want to spend the money, but I think you sold me on the powers of this camera. No grain to be found... This is some Discovery channel stuff right here. Amazing.

  • thanks for the low light video! Very helpful! I love this camera!

  • PJakopin,

Is the headlight on the helmet of the canoeiest counted in your description of the lighting?

In the close quarters, were you carrying a light with 20/40w bulb?

    Thanks, Mooncloud

  • This is and excellent camcorder, I have one and love it.
