With the ironic motto "Peace is our Profession", the Strategic Air Command was in charge of US nuclear forces from 1946 to 1992. SAC was the ultimate Cold War military machine, at its height controlling thousands of nuclear weapons, planes, and missiles, and boasting over a quarter-million personnel. We travel to the Strategic Air and Space Museum, located 20 miles from SAC's old headquarters in Nebraska, and walk through the cavernous bomb bay of SAC's workhorse, the B-52 Bomber.

  • Hats Off to all of the mid & lower-echelon members of SAC over its 46 year history. Those were the superbly-trained personnel who propped up the whole command. The mainstay SAC leader during that time, Gen Curtis LeMay, was a bit too much of a gung-ho hawk, however .. too close-minded for his own good.

  • Strategic Air Command was a very professional command, we made sure we were ready to strike any nation that might attempt to strike the United States. i served with the 92d Security Police Squadron at Fairchild Air Force Base from December of 1977 to June of 1982. I am proud to have served with SAC.
