The hospital started as a single free bed, not a hospital, for the Grand Rapids’ poor. A group of women recognized many in the community didn’t have money for medical care. The group raised funds by asking for contributions in the name of all Marys. If your mom's name was Mary, or your best friend's, these civic-minded women asked you make a donation in her name. Soon the group raised enough funds to endow a free bed, which became known as the “Mary Free Bed.”
