  • I can not imagine how much money a class with him would have cost. All of the people here are supposed to be great guitar players in their own right. They sought instruction from Andres Segovia because he is regarded as one of the greatest classical guitarists who ever lived. This is a "masters class" for a reason. You must expect harsh criticism, for many it would have been an honor to receive instruction of him at all.

  • From the shape of the headstock, it looks as if he is playing a Jose Ramirez estudio (student model)... Maybe he only used the concert models for concerts? Anyone know anything about this?

  • A lot of people talk about his impatience, and I think this comes from the masterclass where he somewhat goes off on the guy. But the reality of that one was, the guy had no business in a masterclass and was wasting his time and that of the others in the workshop. Apart from that most of what I have seen is gentle encouragement but without walking on eggshells so as not to offend the student... The idea that a masterclass instructor should be a cheerleader is ridiculous...

  • @aristotle358 She was intimidated becasue he was Andres Segovia... Even Oscar Ghiglia got nervous around him and from what I understand he was one of Segovia's favorites...

What would be the point in a masterclass where the teacher didn't interrupt you to give tips and advice? That's called a recital...

  • @aristotle358 yeah I gotcha. btw have you seen Chapdelaine's audience with Segovia?

  • @Jemoh66 I understand and agree with you. My point was more to do with masters turning their disciples into themselves whereas it is possible to have different masters and different takes on how to express a piece

  • @aristotle358 apples and oranges. She is not there to prove how well she can play. She has already proven herself and thus was allowed an audience with the master. She is there for his input, so he can raise her playing even higher. A trained ear can hear that his sound and ear for the piece is superior to hers. Also he is quite kind and patient with her; not like his is with the guys.

  • The trouble with master classes is that the master tries to make a clone of his own playing rather than letting the person express his/her self. I think she played well but was intimidated by his constant stopping and getting her to play his way. How boring music would be if we were all clones of one master or another!!

  • @falconfira I was able to sit in the audience in a Masterclass in 1986 at USC. It was free and all those that participated in the actual class did not pay.

A lot of the major classical guitar artists teach in University's with Classical Guitar Majors. Christopher Parkening teaches at Pepperdine and holds free master classes. USC has the Romeros , Scott Tenant. Juan Serrano(flamenco) teaches in one of the UC schools. There are a lot of great teachers for those willing to learn.
