Standing in the middle makes the down the line shot too easy. "Follow the ball". You want to leave them only the very hard wide & short shot. Standing in the middle leave too much open.

Point two of 'Approaching the net' is incorrect I think. The middle of the court gives you an easier option to return either side you want and a short shot is very hard to defend from there. What was your logic in saying the opposite?
