KYW Newsradio 1060 Philadelphia reports the Blizzard snowstorm of 1983. THE CORRECT DATE FOR THIS AIRCHECK IS FEBRUARY 11, 1983. One viewer FACETHETRADE wrote to me the following about the Blizzard of 1983: "No one should forget that blizzard, technically it was the last one true full blown blizzard to hit NY and the Eastern seaboard. Actually since 1947, there were only 2 that were of that magnitude,1978 and 1983. The 1996 one didn't qualify and the rest have been cupcakes from the '83 one.

The qualifications haven't been met since 1983:

Criteria are:

1) Heavy snow 2 inches or more an hour

2) SUSTAINED winds of over 35 mph, not gusts but sustained

3) 20 degree Farenheit temperature or UNDER.

None after 1983 qualified. They all missed at least one of these. The weather men are schmucks always saying this one was a blizzard. NO TRUE. Also to have a true blue blizzard, it's alot like a winter hurricane. The jet stream has to come out of Alberta, Canada and dip south to Arkansas and then turn 180 up the coast. This creates a big "trough" and the big Arctic high and this low get really close to each other and this causes the northerly wind to blow into the storm blowing it up into a hurricane and bringing the temperatures down under 20 degrees and making those sustained winds of over 35 mph. This hasn't happened since '83. ...Except the 1993 storm of the century but this one impacted the Appalachians, not the seacoast. Seacoast got rain and freezing rain on that one. But technically it was a blizzard for the mountains. So it was 1947,1978,1983 and 1993. That's it!!"

  • @rainallday I was 7 when the 78 blizzard happened,I woke up that morning and looked out the window of our apartment, and all the cars were buried up to the top of the side windows,I asked my mom if school was closed and she answered"school is closed, work is closed, the store is closed, everything is closed"Great memories

  • @Albanynyer84 I lived in Levittown also when this storm happened,I was in 6th grade at Emerson Elementary school,I remember it most because my class was supposed to go on a field trip to a TV studio in NY to see a cooking show(my teacher was a chef). We got dismissed from school at 10am(it was a Friday)so with the storm and the trains talking about striking,it was a big ?.Well the trip got cancelled,I was so MAD,The teacher said we would go in the spring, but we NEVER did,June came quick

  • I was 7 years old, lived outside of Philadelphia in Levittown, Bucks County...I remember it quite well!

  • I was working at the nursing home where my mother's at today, and living in Lansdowne at the time. I was out sick from work with a cold. I had also planned to go out that day and treat myself. That Sunday, I walked to and from work in two feet of snow.

Six months later, I went out to sunny Los Angeles.

  • I was in 6th grade when this storm happened, living in Bucks County PA,my class was supposed to go on a field trip the Monday after this storm(hit on a Friday)well the trip got cancelled,we NEVER went on it

  • Heheh.....I was just two years old when this happened!!!

  • I remember this one very well. I was a 5th grader at Loesche elementary in NE Philly and they let us out early on that day. Also, back then, neighbors actually used to help one another shovel snow. Today, everyone has a snow blower and only does their own property.

  • I was conceived due to this storm... Thanks storm!

  • Ed Abrams' still at 1060 to this day!!!!

  • It was a fun storm to drive in...Cars were off the road abandoned all over...Cars completely covered over with snow.

Blizzard of 78 was worse though...
