  • This is a rather sad song, isn't it?

  • I hear sadness, anger and humor; as only DVR could tell it.

  • Great version, but I stil think Anne Rabson nailed this song on her Album "Music Making Mama" (1997) track 4! Thanks for sharing, and also for forwarding me Tom Lehrer's "Old Dope Peddler".

  • I'll have to check out Anne Rabson's version Thanks for the heads up!

As I remember you posted a request for the Lehrer song.

  • My grampa used to sing this all the time. I looked through other covers but never found one that sounded the way he used to sing it. This is it and OMG.. It's sad but like, in a good way, to hear this song again..

Thanks for uploading. Five stars :]

  • Thank you very much for letting me know! It's comments such as yours that make it worthwhile to take the time to upload videos!

  • I was fortunate to have seen and spoken with Big Dave on a number of occassions. Sweet guy! One time I asked him to do "One Meatball" before a show. I didn't know at the time it was his Mother's favorite. He played it first song and shot me a little wink. The scat singing is unbelievable and Dave was a gentle giant. Last time I saw him was at "The Bottom Line". I bought him a drink. It was an honor to sit with him.

  • Heard this on the radio the other day. incredible song. Thanks for sharing on youtube.

  • Really want to thank you for posting Dave van Ronk. I have tried to get No Dirty Names, but haven't. Glad I got to see him.

    again, thanks

  • @im4wur My late husband used to do this song too,and this version is closest to his because of the tempo and guitar style.I had forgotten some of the lyrics. My husband used to add (and no spaghetti) in the chorus on occasion.

    Thanks!

  • @skelotan Well it is a song of the depression era after all!,, like buddy can you spare a dime.

  • @im4wur

Ry Cooder's version was the first I ever of heard this song. Since then I have heard many others, ranging from ernest to silly. This one brings out so much hidden emotion...a real gem. Thank you so much for sharing Mr Van Ronk.

  • this song reminds me of my dad. great memories with him singin this song. thanks for putting it up friend! hey...cant get no bread with one meatball is now mine and my fiancees catch line for eachother. we say it to everyone and they have no clue but whoever we do show this to loves it.

  • It's nice to hear Ronk play some Josh White. Ronk is one of the few musicians who can play any, any early blues tune and do it as interestingly as the original. By the way, Josh White is TOO smooth? Oh, oh man. No, no, no, no!!!!

  • @parmstrong9327 Roy Bookbinder & Rock Bottom covered this song very well on thier only album together. I cannot remember the album title.Check it out. Roy is an awesome guitarist.

  • DVR does some of the silliest scats I've ever heard, they border on Shooby Taylor territory!

  • George Harrison said that this was probably the first songs he ever sang and one of the first songs he remembers hearing(Josh White's version.)
