We can't tell exactly how much oil America has, but that's true there're alot of resources underground in the US, there must be other reason not to use it.

Bakken holds huge reserves, but they are technically challanging to extract and no way near the 500 billion barrels you're mentioning. The $16 a barrel you're talking about looks more like $70 to me, simply to make operations feasable. Frakking fro; shales can be just as cumbersom and capital intensive as deep sea or tarsands. Compared to an annual global decline rate of 5% to 9% in crude extraction on a daily basis, Bakken means nothing. It will never offset the trend of diclining production.
