Surely the most rational explanation is that what the uncle hit over the head with a shovel was an animal of some sort, a rat, a snake, a fox, it could be anything. Can we really expect a five year-old to accurately interpret what is going on. The boy was only five, don't forget that. He was still believing in fairies and Father Christmas. Mummy would have spun some tale about the 'alien' being buried in the church. Is the narrator taking the mick? I wonder.
