actually!!!!! Its NEITHER a hanging or peacock!!!! It is a bird related to the crane! Peacocks are usually very colorful and have the 'eye' looking markings on their feathers. The ones in WOO are black and white!! ;)

has never been any claim by a producer, actor, stagehand or anybody affiliated with the movie to back up this claim. The interview that people point to is Judy Garlands reference to the munchkins lechery and drunken behavior. It is most likely a rumor spread in 1989 for the 50th anniversary release of the film to boost sales. Which seems to have worked. It stated a man who was turned down by a munchkin hung himself. The director brought in all kinds of birds from the Los Angeles zoo to give the set a more outdoorsy feel. This shot was also taken separate from the munchkin scenes so no munchkins were present.
