http://www.rei.com/expertadvice It's just as important to stay hydrated in the winter as it is in the summer, but it's more difficult due to freezing temperatures. If you're using a hydration hose you can start with warm water to slow down the freezing process. In addition, try getting a backpack with an insulated sleeve. The most important thing of all is keeping water out of the hose itself. Do that by lifting up the hose and opening up the valve, or blowing the water back down the hose after you've taken a drink.

  • Its an older version of the Black Diamond Avalung pack - product number 790726 on the REI site. Design and colors are slightly different but the insulated sleeve is still a feature. (and you cant tell from the video) A number of REI packs also have the insulated sleeve in the shoulder strap. Let me know if you need any more direction or help finding the right pack! There's bags specific to winter sports that can also help carry your gear.

  • wouldnt it be easier to keep ip in the jacket the whole time? :p

  • Man I should have thought of that. I ended up eating snow on a climb because my line froze. And before people comment I was monitoring my core temperature.

  • That's a great tip to keep the water out of the tube - simple yet effective. Thanks for including it.

  • Which water system was that?
