This project uses a magnetic reed switch, a NerdKits microcontroller kit, and a set of computer speakers to frighten unsuspecting trick-or-treaters at the door.
The project gives us a chance to cover some pretty neat engineering concepts including digital audio, data compression using Huffman codes, and outputing audio via PWM with analog filtering. The Huffman decoder is actually generated as a C function by a set of Python scripts that do the encoding of our recorded wave file. As always we have explanations of the engineering concepts, diagrams of the project, and the complete source code on the project website http://www.nerdkits.com/videos/halloween_huffman_audio/
