QuikClot® brand hemostatic agent is a breakthrough product that saves lives by rapidly stopping severe bleeding. It is composed of an inert mineral substance that can be formulated and delivered to meet a variety of medical needs and applications. QuikClot® is changing the way we look at traumatic bleeding, by giving the first responder and others, an additional tool they can use to save a life.
Where the burns took place, from my understanding, was when the quikclot covered more surface area of skin than the blood covered. If the quikclot was saturated with blood, the exothermic reaction was mild or non existant. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my research on the product that's what I have gathered. As an emt, i like to have a well rounded first aid kit for some of the dangerous hobbies that I have. This product may or may not make it into that kit based on some personal criteria.

the funny thing is they make out the exothermic reaction was an unwanted side effect that caused burns. in reality it was always designed to get hot, that was the whole idea (a stupid one), the heat removed the water from the blood causing it to clot. Very painful and caused alot of surgical complications as the burnt skin had to be cut away prior to surgery. But it worked and it saved lives so that is the main thing, a bloody good thing too.

@majormayhem1 Yes, the new formula is made with kaolin, which doesn't burn like the old formula with zeolite. However, unless you're a healthcare professional, first responder, law enforcement, or military, you can't get the kaolin. The consumer formula is still the old zeolite. z-medica has the info, click on consumer then the consumer products tab. Just a head's up. It's still better than bleeding out!

@nuclearthreat545 That concerned me, from what I have heard from friends that had gotten back from Iraq. They said they would have rather got shot again then to use the old quick clot

they have a gauze that is made to do the same but there is no heat involved so no more burns
