These clips are off of a CD-Rom created by David Goldberg Sensei back in the mid '90's. All techniques are demonstrated by Frank Doran Shihan, 7th dan, head instructor at Aikido West in Redwood City, CA, with the assistance of a variety of uke.

  • Luigibett - as discussed above - this is not intended as a full-speed "real attacker" situation. This was a series of clips compiled so students could see the footwork, the timing, the posture, and the hand position associated with a number of techniques. In real life - everything would be much faster, and I suspect you'd find it sufficiently realistic.

  • (continued) Some clips were taken in Switzerland (blue floor), some at Aikido Ai in Whittier (a mirror in the background, and a Japanese uke). I think the woman you see near the end is Molly Hale.

  • Breeegz - I don't know them all. Julio is not among them in these clips I don't think (but he's excellent if you ever have the chance to see him or train with him). Many of the clips taken at Aikido West (particularly the ones with no one else on the mat, and a weapon rack on the wall to the right) feature Phil Cruz, who now teaches down in San Diego. I also recognize Bill McGuirk (now teaching in Minneapolis).

  • Shaywei - you might be surprised how well "that dance" might work. You might also be surprised how well it works to not think of the other guy as an "opponent". That said, Doran sensei has not always been an aikido teacher - he used to be a Marine Corps unarmed combat drill instructor, so I'm guessing he could handle your hypothetical "real opponent" too.

You're supposed to have shodan or above in Karate before they start teaching you Aikido. The western martial business perspective is what stopped that practice. An Aikido school that doesn't follow that rule should be teaching basic punch/kick and adding in Atemi throughout the techniques.

  • thanks.. :P one of my fav. vids.. wish more would try to understand the art , the way, The LOVE!!!

  • HAHA the technique at 3:00 we did in class today and I found it so peculiar. Seeing it here makes me laugh. Thanks for posting this video :D

  • Aaaaaah! I hate this talk about realism!!!! Its aikido, enjoy instead of talking about things you don't know anything about. This video was awesome, some of the best looking aikido ive ever seen! Thanks for posting!!

  • Alles unrealistisch.

  • That was pretty cool to watch. I was looking for a particular uke named Julio Toribio, but with the video quality and age of some of the clips I didn't recognize him.

Mr Kent, do you happen to know these uke?

  • many say aikido is useless because they re not learning it right. Real life combat requires aikido mixed with kickboxing or krav maga. when u learnthese two arts together, you can kick any1s ass. thats wat the military learns, marine Corps, Special forces, SEALs
