Exercise in Swing -- Johnny Guarnieri Swing Men 1944
Johnny Guarnieri had the ability to adopt to almost any style to suit the recording occassion. In this tune he paid tribute to pianist Fats Waller who had died not long before. One of the best drummers was Cozy Cole who plays with a strong and solid drive, something each musician wishes for. Lester Young surely enjoyed playing in the Waller feeling. Unfortunately he had never made any recordings in the Waller manner.
The other two fine musicians are Hank D'Amico on clarinet and Billy Butterfield on trumpet.
Missing you tonight Grampa.....I LOVE YOU!!!! xoxoxox

Johnny Guarnieri was a terrific pianist; he played with Prez and also with Benny Goodman; Goodman always had terrific pianists; Jess Stacy, Teddy Wilson, Johnny Guarnieri and Mel Powell, to name a few; terrific.
I love that this recording uses a Count Basie like sound for the rhythm and overall tone of the session; very well done!

AWESOME does not even begin to describe it. I need to search the dictionary to find a word that multiplies that word by maybe a thousand. WOW.
Never heard this one before. I was surfing looking for Guarnieri with Harpsichord. I have a few but this is just ... oh damn. I feel like Durante looking for that lost note. I'm looking for a lost word. May have to make one up.
MANY thanks for posting this.

Imo this song carries in itself all the joy and hope of mankind as World War II was ending at last, after so many years of horror and suffering ! Each time I'm listening to this song, I feel better and joyful ! These guys were giants !

Lively piece of light swing music.
All the musicians are terrific.
Guarnieri must have fingers flexible but tough as steel to produce such a loud clear crisp sound.
What a lift the group must get being able to play like that !
