A fifth-grade student in New York who wanted to deliver a speech for marriage equality had his opportunity censored, but later reinstated at a different session due to immediate backlash, US media organisations report.

Kameron Slade, a student at a local school in Queens won a school-wide competition to deliver a speech, but upon discovering that his topic was marriage between same-sex couples, his principal threatened to remove him from the contest if he did not change the topic.

Sweet, and I'm sure the kid agrees with what he is reading but I can't help feeling by the way he is reading it and the wording that his mother wrote this speech. A shame as it loses it's integrity.

Alternatively, his mother helped him work through his thoughts about it and translated those thoughts into a well-written speech. A plausible scenario and one where it doesn't lose its integrity x

For a topic that's been discussed for so long, so extensively and so emotionally, this fellow nails it in all of two-and-a-half minutes. Whether his future leads to politics or the pulpit or somewhere else, it's encouraging for all of us.

'Under god' was added to the pledge in 1952 by mistake. It was not supposed to go through. This country says so in the constitution that we can believe any religion we want, or none at all. You hold no standpoint.

the fact that a fifth grader understands equality better than 80% of all politicians is frightening

First of all "under God" was added to the pledge in the 50's, NOT at the founding of our nation. And secondly, the principles of Christianity you refer to include support for slavery & the subjugation of women, & what makes it so much more special, many Founding Fathers, themselves, owned slaves. So... your opinions on Christianity, & the influences they have had, do not mean that much to me. You believe whatever you want, but I'll stick with secular democracy & the principle of live & let live.

Those "Christian principles" you refer to were not what the country was founded on, and things like adding "under god" were generally added later. It is well-documented historically that the men who formed our early government had little time for or belief in any god, let alone Jesus. These were educated men, great thinkers of the Enlightenment. Freedom, democracy and independence do not have deep roots in Christianity, they were and are revolutionary ideas.

Not everyone in America is Christian, and most of the gay people that want to get married are not Christians. They don't care about Christian principles. Furthermore, a man and a woman can get married even if they can't have children or have no intention of having children. And anyway, why do you care? This doesn't affect heterosexual people at all.
