Hello Mike,
Actually it is possible in Islam to believe that a christian can be a muslim because muslim mean "submit to God".
But it is not what most people believe when they hear "muslim", it is like you said, there is a kind of exclusion.
There was muslim before Islam came, in Islam, it is believed that it is all inclusive, christian, judaism are all the same message from the same God. It is just not completely authentic.

I'm glad you pointed that out, I don't really have much knowledge into the traditions. Submission to God is a good pointer, and there is definitely a resonance of the "true" message in Islam, Christianity, and all the traditions. Thanks for clarifying that, all the best.
