avi is a large video format which would probably play very jerky on an IPOD or any hand held MP3 player. You may have the same problem with the video where it would go out of sink, the main reason it does that is the video bandwith is not able to keep up with the much smaller audio. When you are converting it, your computer may not be able to keep the video conversion up with the audio causing it to fall out of sink. This happens mainly on HD on a single core processor. computer.
Yea the ipod format problem drove me crazy when I first got my ipod, because I wasn't very tech savvy. Fortunately though, "ipod format" videos are beginning to be more common online, for that reason. Unfortunately, I don't see Apple changing their video format; they have all the pirating protection in place to keep good relations with the music industry. If they let that go, iTunes wouldn't be as successful, or as universal of a place to get media.
Using piracy as an argument is silly, some of like to reward those who have worked hard to give us movies and music we enjoy. If everyone had your attitude, there would be no music or movies, as they'd all go bankrupt.
Download realplayer and download the video to put on your iPod and convert it to iPod and when done, it should ask to add to iTunes.

I have videos on my computer that are MP4 and Quicktime...
I have a 2nd gen iPod nano though so that doesn't really mean anything to me :P
But it's WAY worse on the Zune. It doesn't even play WMA lol!
