Duo-Tones Surf Jam at the Huntington Beach Surf Museum parking lot on 7/24/2005. Eight local surf guitar players took turns in a tribute to Paul Johnson, playing Mr. Moto along with Paul and Gil (aka, The Duo Tones). In order of appearance, along with Paul and Gil, are Dave Wronski (Slacktone), Ron Eglit (Surfaries, also Dick Dale's former bass player), Tom Stanton (Surf Kings), Matt Quilter (Reventlos), Rich Knight (Royaltones), Dave Arnson (Insect Surfers), Rob Woolsey (Detonators), and Bob Spickard (Chantays). Unfortunitly, my memory card filled up while Bob was playing, so that, and PJ and Gil closing the performance is missing.

Sorry for the poor quality, but I shot this with my still camera in movie mode. But it will give those of you who were there something to remember, and those of you who weren't there, an idea of what we get to see here in Southern California :-)

Thanks to HBkahuna and photog4surfbands from surfguitar101.com for helping me id all the players!

  • The kid in the blue shirt took it away.

  • @wontonton He's been around a while, not exactly a kid :-) His name is Ron Eglit. He was Dick Dale's bass player from 1979 through 2003. He's been playing guitar with the Surfaries since 2005.

  • The guy with the sunburst Jag is Dave Wronski of Slacktone. He's one of today's hottest surf players. Search YouTube for Slacktone to see more of him. I don't know which one you are calling "punk" dude. The guy in the blue shirt is Ron Eglit. I don't what you have against him, he's got the credentials... played bass for Dick Dale for years.

  • I don't see him turning down the reverb. The reverb tank is to the right of the amp. I only see him plugging in, he, and the guy that preceded him might have turned the volume down/up to prevent connection noise. Also, he's not stupid.

  • The Jag and Jazzmaster sounded best. The sunburst Strat was ok too. And someone take a skill saw to that SG, yuck.

  • Yea, what do you expect from someone who brings a POS gibson to a surf show...

  • grande abraço para todos!!! muito legal o evento

  • These guys all know to turn the sound down before plugging in, then turn it back up. Paul Johnson is one of the smoothest surf guitars around!

  • You said it hollies65. Infectious - especially if you listen during a record blizzard (here in DC last weekend). Brings back memories of Huntington Beach high in '61...it was new then; still great...

  • Boss! 10 minutes of Mr Moto guitar heaven. Monster post.

  • Man,hearing someone say Ron Eglit was a poser..ouch..that cat is surf guitar.
