Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today was asked at a press conference whether reconciliation is the only way the Senate can pass health care reform. Reid's answer was a definitive "no." The Leader also reminded the press that since 1981, reconciliation has been used as many as 21 times to pass legislation, and a majority of those efforts were conducted by Republicans.

  • The same Republican tools who hypocritically cry about Dem reconciliation are the same Republican tools who actually believe this health care reform is in any way "taking over" any part of the economy, let alone 1/7th. [face palm]

  • History showsd this has only been used for tax CUTS, never for new taxes, and Clinton veto'd many of those bills passed in such a way, crying is a sad thing to say, and maybe if you have any decency when you are finally voted out we can all hear you cry, for you Sir, made the very same pronouncments that are being made today against such use of the rule, remember your long wionded speach from 2007?.how soon we forget

  • It has been used 21 times since 1981. Thats less than 1 time a year. It was used by Republicans on finacial issues such as tax cuts, not taking over 1/7th of the economy. Harry Reid should be ashamed of his attempts to trick the American people with his rhetoric.

  • YEAH!!!! Getter Done!

  • Oh snap! Finally the dems in the Senate are fighting back against the lies being spewed by the republicans. Although i think obama needs to give up on trying to be bi-partisan. He is offering the republicans a televised event to discuss hc and they are still whining. He gives them what they want and they are still unhappy. If you give a mouse a cookie..... Obama maybe trying to go for bi-partisanship but if he fails it is his reputation on the line. HC reform is the defining issue for O's term.

  • PUBLIC OPTION NOW.

  • So why arent you getting it Done! Public option, Now!

  • Harry putting on the boxing gloves...about time!!

  • YES! Go Senator Reid!

  • Thank you, Speaker Reid! This is great.

And doesn't it just follow that the skyrocketing use of the filibuster by the minority would cause much more use of reconciliation than normal?
