Had to repair the front differential in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. And all that time I thought the grumbling noise was the mother in law! Seriously, I bought the Jeep with a hundred thousand K, so I thought the noise was typical to the four wheel drive. Now the road is rough, but the Jeep she is shmooze. Gord.

  • could please tell me when the noise was coming? Was it all time noise? Only on acceleration or only deceleration? Speeds?

  • The noise was most prominent from about 40 km to higway speed. Cancelling the cruise control caused the noise to lessen until deceleration. And then, as you say, on manual fuel feed it was prominent on acceleration then on deceleration. We removed the transfer case, but it was solid, and lubed up the drive shaft from the transfer case. Taking the front differential apart showed the wear on the bearings and race. This Jeep has 250K or 150 000 miles. Hope this helps. Gord.

  • @gordorayno thanks for reply! So you had noise as on deceleration so as on acceleration. I have 96 ZJ with front diff noise (more like whine) only on deceleration. I changed ring and pinion with all new bearings but it still whines. Changed input/output bearing and chain in t-case, new front driveshaft u-joints and no result. Can you please help me with advice? thanks!

  • Hello vr1exe; Sounds like you have spent some time and money with this problem, and at first glance I would try to be funny and say maybe you should get some cheese for that whime and just enjoy it. (Arrggg) To be serious I will tell my Jeep Mech about it and get back to you as soon as he gives his feedback (He is gone for a couple days for Christmas). You probably guessed by the 'cheese comment' that I am not a mechanic (Sorry abat that) but I will post as soon as I get the goods. Gord.

  • @gordorayno haha, it would be great. Thank you very much and merry Christmas!

  • My Jeep Tech says: If the crown and pinion are not precisely aligned, or have uneven wear, it will whine. The alignment is achieved by shims. The gear is to be painted with 'gear paint', run on the paint to see which way to adjust the shims. Wear pattern should be in direct center. Since you already have new parts in there, adjustment should be all that is needed. Then the road could be rough, but your ZJ will be schmooze ... even on deceleration. Let us know how it turns out? Gord.

  • @Dotchetter could be. if the tooth broke I would find a shop who can adjust/fix diffs asap. good thing that it broke at low speed. Or, just buy a new axle (if you buy used one, it is 50:50 chance that it will be in the same condition as yours or worse). Take care and good luck! :)

  • @vr1exe Incorrect adjustment... hm well it could be my problem. And maybe, one of my teeth broke too! one morning, I heard a loud bang from the front end, but never heard anything after that again. it works great, too! oh well. now at least, i know the problem.

I might just get a whole new front axle anyway -.-

  • @Dotchetter hey, got it fixed year ago. problem was in incorrect adjustment. funny thing is that 2 young students adjusted it correctly for 70$ when "professionals" at chrysler dealer shop couldn't fix it 3 times in a row. Those guys (students who fixed it) said that I was lucky enough that pinion teeth didn't brake (as they said, there was no adjustment at all, lots of play). I'm really happy that Jeep is quite now. Hope your Jeep is fixed too :)

  • @vr1exe How did it go?

  • @gordorayno This is very interesting. My Jeep does the very same thing, whine from the diff.

The pinion bearing was replaced by a mechanic and the whine INCREASED. reading your post, I now understand why; uneven wear?

Is an adjustment is all that is needed?

  • @vr1exe

Hello Gord! Thank you very much for your help! Now I need to find a good shop that can do it correctly (since official chrysler dealer cant). I will let you know if I fix this problem! I wish you and your family and your mechanic a Happy New Year! ;)
