A report on YouTube's settings with some recommendations. From now on I'll try to provide a broad description of how YouTube works, to replace any outdated information. I've started this blog entry dedicated to keeping you up to date:
http://nerdwithnolife.blogspot.com/2009/03/latest-youtube-information.html

There will also be a separate series on improving the quality of your videos; not just for YouTube, but in general. This way the stuff you learn will be more portable, and you can adapt to changes as they come.

This video had better look good - it took me 12 hours to upload it!

  • wat if it sez, "an unknown error occured.."

how can i know wats d problem?

    pls help me. . .

  • I guess I'd try either A) upload it again or B) upload it in a different format. What settings did you use with which program?

  • can any one help me,every time i upload a video it says upload has falied and unable to play.plz help

  • I've had plenty get stuck in processing lately, which is very annoying. But if you get "failed to convert," or something like that, Artemis707 is right: try a different format because what you're using isn't working. You'll get problems with: a first pass without a second pass. There's no usable video; the first pass is only for gathering statistics! Also weird codecs don't always work, Lagarith lossless is one YouTube can't convert.

  • Hi Derek, I've noticed a strange thing and this applies to this video as well.

As you say (and as I always do) to force HQ it's enough to add &fmt=18, but SOMETIMES (as in your video), the REAL HQ version is avalaible if you add "&fmt=35": in these cases the "&fmt=18" version is the same as the low quality version ( infact the annotation link you added leads to a low quality video).

Have you already made some testing with the "&fmt=35" parameter that you can share ?

    Thanks

  • I haven't played with the &fmt links lately; I gave up on it and started pulling videos from the cache. But they've actually changed things again. Getting the HQ link is MUCH easier!

  • yeah nice. got a lot to laugh ;-)

  • i cant upload my video says every day i try it says upload fails

  • google - upload themusicage

  • Probably because he's a partner.

  • you can only upload a video longer than 10 minutes if you're a partner

  • How about the duration? How to upload 14-min video? Secret?

  • Oh, one more thing...

You should check this video watch?v=AkyRHn1ehYo

For non-wide 720x480 I use the "SAR" 10:11, for wide 720x480 SAR is 40:33, there is no need to resize since the encoder will do the job.

  • This is not true, check out my channel, I upload my videos with 720x480, one thing you have to watch to fill the screen is to use a proper aspect ratio. I use x264 (H.264) + AAC (from ffmpeg) and mux then with mkvmerge as 'MKV', again, check my channel to see how good it does.

  • thats not true...
