Dr. Gabbe on
Health Care Reform

What people really need is care for their children, care if theyre pregnant, prevention and wellness services, and catastrophic care. Thats whats most important. If we had that, that would make an enormous difference. Because people dont come in for prevention and wellness services because they cant afford them or theyre not covered by their insurance, they come in late for prenatal care which increases their risk for premature birth or other pregnancy complications, they dont have coverage for catastrophic disasters, a car accident for example, and so their savings are wiped out.

We also need to look at the new medical home model, where people will have a cadre of individuals caring for them. Therell be a team leader of the medical home, who might be their primary care doctor, but there will be a nurse practitioner, a nutritionist, there may be a specialist who enters and oversees the care during a period of illness, but there will be a team approach. Thats something we can do here that others cant do because we have all the members of the team in our different health sciences colleges on one campus so we can train people to work as part of that medical home team.
