Wait I don't understand. I know its electric but its still got a manual transmission. The clutch isn't hooked up, but how are you able to get it into first and reverse? In a gasoline car, if you tried to get into first or reverse without clutch wouldn't it grind the gears?

In a regular, ICE (internal combustion engine) car the engine is spinning all the time, even when you are stopped. That is why you need a clutch to get it into first or reverse. In an electric car the motor is not always spinning. Thus at a stop, with the motor not spinning, you can put it in first or reverse without a problem!

40 miles on the lead acid batteries. Some day I'll be able to afford Lithium Ion bateries which will take it ovewr 100 miles.

couldn't you just put a momentary cut off switch on the shifter handle, push it in with your thumb and shift? or do you always have to pass though N? Would be nice to see from the backseat (or is that where the 1.21Gw flux capacitor is?) what you hand and foot is doing. I'm building an EV and would love to use a manual trans since an auto trans is boring and leaves my right hand free to pick my nose. In the old days cheap first cars were always stick so now I miss having something to do.

Yes, an EV conversion can have a clutch. It does add a bit of safety if the motor should turn full on you can disengage it with the clutch.

If you aren't racing, then you really dont need it. Coasting in neutral can be done without a clutch but it won't save you much.

You can also go to my website eLectricDeLorean com and get my direct email address.

Wow, really fast reply. Thanks a lot.

With your explanation, it seems clear as water to me that i would have to have a clutch. Can a converted EV have a clutch ?

What about coasting ? I have a lot of hills here, and im allways with low fuel. So i am used to coast a lot in Neutral to save fuel. Will it do the same and save battery power ?

When you downshift, you must make the transmission input shaft spin faster so you must put it in neutral and rev a bit. If you don't, the tranny synchros will not be at the right speed and it won't let you shift. If you force it something will grind and possibly break. Is you must up or down shift fast then you need a clutch...

First let me thank you for showing me something that on EV forums everyone is scared to explain to me. Now let me ask you, what happens if you downshift let's say from 4th to 3rd without letting it rest in Neutral and rev it a bit ? Like a real downshift for a corner.

    Thanks in advance
